3 Key Things about Fly Fishing in Low, Clear Water

Low and clear water can make spooky fish making such spots extremely difficult.  Fortunately, anglers don’t need to stow their trout rods away. Here are 3 incredible tips to enjoy fishing through summer and early fall!

Check water levels

Water data from the US Geological Service is an excellent source of information for anglers. Both historic and real-time data give you access to data about stream conditions sitting at the comfort of home!  During low water, look out for trends on the bell curve or water level trajectory. If stream levels are constantly falling, spots are going to change pretty dramatically.

Watch for rain

Rain is your friend if stream levels fall critically low. Even a little rain can foster bug life, sending the trout on a heavy feeding cycle. Rain also disrupts the water surface and can allow you to approach water without being seen.  Time your fishing trips with an eye on the forecast. The perfect timing is to hit a stream right after the water levels have peaked and start to fall.

Downsize the rig

Low and clear water means skittish trout. When water is like this, use smaller and more discreet rigs to keep trout unsuspecting.

When the water gets low and clear, anglers should quickly adjust to the change. If you are sticking to what worked in higher water levels, you may soon be wondering why the trout are so hard to catch now!  A lighter rig will lower your level of disturbance and keep you in the game.
