Leave No Trace When on the Water

Mammoth Lakes in California is home to many beautiful water bodies – streams, rivers, and lakes. They provide many opportunities for adventures, from fishing and boating to swimming and even just relaxing.

Keeping the water and its surroundings unpolluted and in their natural form is extremely important. Here are some easy tips to take good care of the water bodies your visit and, especially when you are leaving.

Be Prepared

When you pack your fishing or other gear, here’s a list of all the things you should not forget to check and do –

  • Find out about –
    • local licenses and/or permits
    • road, trail, or facility closures and any other regulations
  • Have a backup plan in case the waterway you want to explore is too crowded
  • Research COVID-related rules for the areas you’re visiting
  • Leave no trace
  • If you’re heading out alone, let someone know where you’ll be and for how long you would be out there

Follow sustainable fishing

The CDFW (California Department of Fish and Wildlife) and most local fishery administrators enforce a daily bag and possession limit, and catch-and-release policies. Before embarking on your fishing adventure, check the CDFW’s regulations for the specific waterway you’re going to. The website also has important information on fishing hours, boat inspections, etc.

Clean up after yourself

If you are driving to your destination, there should be no trace of your being there when you leave. Do not leave behind any fishing line specifically. It is not only unsightly but takes 100s of years to biodegrade, is harmful to wildlife if they become entangled or mistakenly ingest it. Pick up your trash and pack out your toilet paper.

If your pets are with you, make sure there is no trace of your pet’s presence as well. Pick up after them and dispose of it properly so that it doesn’t contaminate the water.

Stay on the trail

Try not to trample the plants on the way. Stay on an established trail to protect plant life. If you are backpacking to a water destination, follow the Leave No Trace guidelines

Respect wildlife. Be a passive observer. Do not feed animals.

Pack up all trash before leaving your spot on the shore.
