All You Need to know about Tides for Fishing

You must have heard about the terms – High tide and Low tide. Do you know the tides affect your ability to fish at sea?

What are tides and what causes them?

A tide refers to changes in the water level that are caused by the Moon’s gravitational forces. The tides are high and low based on moon’s proximity to Earth.

As a result, a high tide occurs every 12 hours and 25 minutes when the moon is closest to any given part of the Earth.

Tides are the strongest in shallow areas, like harbors, bays, estuaries, islands and reefs. In such areas, parts of the land may become saturated with water at high tide and dry out when the tide is low.

How do tides affect fishing?

When the tide goes out, fish retreat to deep water. When the tide comes in, fish come back in search of food. Hence, you need to venture into deeper waters when the tide is low. You can fish closer to the shore when the tide comes in.

Are there best tides to fish?

Moving tides are the best to fish – when it’s between high tide and low tide. Incoming tides are good for fishing since fish come into shallower areas looking for food. You can also fish the outgoing tide, especially if you are fishing in as hallow channel where fish will be when they are heading into deeper waters.

Avoid slack waters

It’s not a good idea to fish when the water is “slack”, or stopped.

So, it’s best to understand the tides to ensure you get the best results when tides for fishing on the beach!
